What to consider before you choose a school?

Ambience: The atmosphere of a school must exuberate positive vibes. Observe the teachers, non teaching staff and children. Their interaction with each other will give you an idea on the environment of the school. It is good if you feel them to be down to earth, happy and respectful in nature. Straight forwardness must exist around the place for your child to imbibe honesty and self discipline.

Behaviour: Ask how they deal with behaviour issues – do they help children understand the need to imbibe discipline and thoughtfulness in their everyday life? It's important that you agree with a school's disciplinary approach and trust their judgement. Are teachers equipped to counsel children and influence their behaviour?

Identifying areas of improvement: Are the teachers skilled to identify physical, learning and behavioural issues? Do they reinforce adjustments regularly and equip parents to do the same at home? Every child needs consistent reminders to make amends to improve themselves.

Physical development: Are there enough hours spent to help the child develop physically? Is there a physical activity happening regularly? Is there a self defence program being emphasized? In this fast paced world, it is important to take care of our kids physical well being. They need to be made aware of posture corrections and be trained to improve flexibility. Children must be encouraged to dance from their hearts as it helps in flexibility and a ego free feeling that helps in having a positive attitude.

Communication: Are the management and staff open in communicating about their policies and the child’s issues? Is it possible to approach the teachers with concerns? What are the modes of communication and the time restrictions? Open communication is the only way to ensure the welfare of the child is discussed in a healthy way. Only if parents and teachers come together can we help provide a nurturing environment at home and school for the child to develop skills.

Responsibility: Are the children given guidance to be more responsible in all their work? Is responsibility a major character of a child in this school? Responsibility teaches a child to be aware of one’s duties and helps them to take care of themselves and others.

Street smart: Every growing child in this era needs to be skilled to deal with practical life rather than being book smart. It is imperative that parents do their part and choose a nourishing environment for the child to think individually and grow to handle life independently.

Every school should be safe and provide a positive learning environment, but there is much more to a school than nice facilities. When choosing a school for your child, it is important to ask the above questions. You might be surprised by what you find out. Gauge the culture of the school and see if it fits into what you would want your child to imbibe from there to mature into an adult. Hope you find what is best for your child and their future needs!
